SUCCESS!

Sunday, May 1st the Nevis Aquatic and Sailing Center was proud to host the 10th Booby Island Regatta led by Captain Miles Denne. Yachts and hobies raced a course in the narrows between St Kitts and Nevis including going around namesake Booby Island.

The afternoon was spent with great company, drinks thanks to Clifton Estate Rum, live music thanks to Greenhouse band, pizzas and burgers from Alejandro, raffle prizes thanks to many sponsors and donors all to benefit the Center’s next phase in site improvement.

Booby Island Races

Booby Island, located midway between St Kitts and Nevis and slightly towards the Atlantic is an iconic sailing landmark. Sailing around her is a must do for any St Kitts and Nevis regatta. When the indigenous Caribs gave Nevis its original name, Oualie meaning “Land of Beautiful Waters”, they must have been referring to this beautiful sailing area around Booby Island.

Yacht Race

Booby Island Regatta was originally created as a few local sailing yachts decided to have a race up the channel around Booby Island Regatta. Now in its 10th year, we hope to continue this tradition. These larger keel boats designed to sail further offshore will come in a range of sizes. To accommodate the various sizes and speeds, a guesstimate will be made of their speed and handicaps will be applied so the bigger faster boats will start at the back in a pursuit race. The smaller slower boats will do their best to stay ahead whilst the larger boats will try to catch up their smaller competitors over a 2 lap race up and down the narrows, sailing via cockleshell bay, cow and calf rocks and around booby island before finishing back in Oualie Bay. There has been a revival in interest in yacht racing worldwide, especially in offshore racing and the upcoming olympics has chosen to feature a double handed offshore yacht class for the first time.

Kiteboard Race

Wind permitting, there will be an open kiteboard racing class. This fast and exciting sport is now an officially recognized sailing class in the Olympics and they will be doing the same course- up and around Booby Island as the sailing yachts. Being an open class all forms of kites and boards are welcome. Although only a few potential racers, we hope to see both traditional kite boards and foiling. It should be a sight to see, having the kites mixed in among the other more traditional sailing classes.

Race Start 11:00am.
